- 17th. There will be a $15.00 fee per dancer to audition for the
company. Dancer's will learn certain criteria and then try out for
teams on Friday, August 17th . Dance Placements and the new team

Criteria, Requirements and Commitment Policy
The purpose of the Competition Program at Dancer's Turnout is to provide an
enrichment program for those selected students who excel in dance and have
demonstrated a sincere desire to commit themselves to furthering their level
of achievement in dance.
Students who exhibit the expertise, talent, discipline, personality, stage
presence, attitude and dedication are selected for specialized professional
training beyond the basic curriculum. Participation in a competition program
can be a positive and motivating experience that will provide new opportunities
and encourage students to develop their abilities to their fullest potential.
In order to maintain the integrity of our Competition Program and provide a
positive, fun and exciting experience for our dancers, the following Criteria,
Requirements and Commitment Policy has been established. We ask that you read
these requirements carefully in order to fully understand the commitment you
are making to the 2005 - 2006 Competition Team.
COMMITMENT
Being on the Competition Team will require a commitment and dedication beyond
that of our regular schedule of classes. Additional time is devoted to outside
class, rehearsals and weekend practices, and extra costs are required for private
lessons, costumes, entry fees, hotel costs, etc. Students may have to sacrifice
other popular activities that may conflict with rehearsals or the competition
schedule. Parents need to be aware that having a child in a program of this
nature will be time consuming before and during the competition season. We
will need the full support of families who are involved in this program. Extra-curricular
activities, family vacations and appointments should be scheduled around competition
classes, rehearsals and competition dates. PLEASE CONSIDER THE ABOVE CAREFULLY
PRIOR TO MAKING YOUR COMMITMENT TO THE COMPETITION TEAM.
CRITERIA
To continue the success of this program, a standard of criteria and set of
guidelines have been established that ALL competition students will be expected
to follow. Failure to comply with the established criteria will result in dismissal
from the competition program.
ATTENDANCE
Regular rehearsal attendance is MANDATORY! Effective learning and progression
cannot take place with the absence of participating members. Students with
more than 3 unexcused absences or two consecutive absences from rehearsal from
October thru June will be subject to dismissal from the number at the discretion
of the individual instructor. An excused absence is defined as permission received
from both Kyli and your instructor to miss a rehearsal. STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED
TO MISS REHEARSAL THE WEEK OF A PERFORMANCE OR COMPETITION OR THEY WILL BE
ELIMINATED FROM THAT NUMBER FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE COMPETITION SEASON.
PRE-REQUISITE CLASSES
All members of the DTA Competition Team are required to take Ballet in order
to be eligible to compete. The following pre-requisites are also required:
· Jazz Technique AND a second Jazz class (if you are performing
in a jazz number)
CLASS DECORUM
Students are expected to arrive to class ON TIME and prepared for dance. Appropriate
dance attire and footwear are expected for every class. Hair must be pulled
back and secure. Students are not to bring food or drink (other than water)
into the dance studios.
Every student is responsible for his or her own behavior. Class time is very
valuable and must be used to concentrate on the learning of dance. Students
are expected to maintain open and positive attitudes with a willingness to
work hard and learn quickly. A student displaying disruptive behavior or showing
a continued lack of concentration and willingness to exert their best effort
will be dismissed from the program.
ELIGIBILITY
Students competing for Dancer's Turnout must compete solely for our organization
unless approved by the owner. As you can imagine, competing for more than one
studio would be a conflict of interest and cause some extreme scheduling problems.
REHEARSAL CLASSES
Scheduled rehearsal times are included on your "Congratulations Letter" for
some of the dances. Instructors will contact each student to set up a schedule
for private or group lessons for those dances that do not have pre-determined
rehearsal times.
1/2 HOUR LESSONS
Solos $25.00
Duos $15.00 each
Trios $10.00 each
COSTUMES
Competition costumes that are ordered from our costume catalogs must be paid
for at the same time you pay your recital costume fees. You will be notified
when you receive your costume order form as to how to pay for your competition
costumes. Please be aware that costumes for competition dances tend to cost
on the average of 50%-60% more than regular recital costumes because of embellishments
or custom designing. Additional costs may be incurred "after the fact" for
special shoes, extra accessories, rhinestones or other items the instructor
chooses for the costume. All costume fees must be paid on or before the due
dates posted to insure that costume orders are placed on time.
MAKE-UP
In order to ensure consistency in appearance on stage, special competition
make-up is required for the Competition Team dancers. An affordable make-up
selection will be chosen that will enhance the appearance of each dancer.
Make- up selection will be announced as soon as decided by instructors.
ACCESSORIES
Special hairclips and earrings are required for each dancer on the Competition
Team. These accessories will be ordered for dancers who do not have them
or for any dancer who would like additional accessories.
COMPETITION DECORUM
All dancers are expected to arrive at the Competition at least ONE HOUR BEFORE
the scheduled performance time. NO EXCEPTIONS! Competitions have been known
to run ahead of schedule and fees will not be refunded for missed numbers.
Your fellow dance mates count on group effort and it is important that everyone
is conscientious of their responsibility to be there on time.
Be respectful of the property of others. Pick up after yourself in dressing
rooms, lunch areas, etc. and follow the rules stipulated by the event hosts
and hotels.
Parents and dancers are expected to be respectful of other studios and each
other at all times. Unfriendly and rude behavior reflects poorly on the individual
and the studio and will not be tolerated.
PARENT SUPPORT
Parental support is very much appreciated by all the teachers; however, it
is very important that we respect all teacher decisions regarding costumes,
choreography, student coaching, score sheets, etc. Please allow the teachers
to focus on their jobs by being supportive. Dancer's Turnout staff will handle
all communication between Competition personnel and our studio unless noted
otherwise.
Occasionally parents are asked to assist the instructor with something outside
of class. Please do not assume that this gives the child "special allowances".
A child's placement in our program is based only on merit and ability.
Parents are responsible for their student at all times prior to and after their
performance on stage. Instructors are working with other students and cannot
be responsible for attending to students who are not dancing. Parents are not
permitted backstage at competitions, unless requested by your instructor.
COMPETITION AWARDS
Trophies earned by Soloists will be given to the individual dancer. Duo/Trio
trophies will be evenly distributed to each dancer throughout the competition
season. Group/Line/Production trophies will be displayed in the studio. Any
cash prizes awarded at a Regional or National Competition will go directly
to the team divided evenly.
Thank you for being diligent in complying with the above requirements. Working
together as a team will make this competition season a positive and enjoyable
experience for everyone.
DTA's Competition Philosophy
TAKING THE HEALTY APPROACH TO DANCE COMPETITIONS
"Competition is healthy; but as dance agent Tony Selznick says, "It's healthy
only if your self-esteem is not connected to your score, AND if you're dancing
for the right reasons." In order to become a better artist, you must always strive
to look at the big picture. So, what's the big picture? Part of the big picture
is to remember that dance is an art form, not a football game. There are no winners
and losers like in a sport or a game. It you think competitions are about awards
and medals, then you're not dancing for the right reasons."
By Don Mirault
(Renowned dancer/choreographer)
Competition requires special teachers, special students, and special parents.
It requires time, talent, dedication, and regard for each other as team members.
Our combined positive attitude guarantees success.
Winning is everything, when you define "winning" as doing your personal best.Students
should compete against themselves and not be critical of others. This means
concentrating on improving their own capabilities and growing as a dancer.
As we practice, travel to competitions, meet new friends, and grow together,
let us remember to show respect for ourselves and for others by always being
supportive of our fellow dancers, parents, and teachers. Teams whose members
support one another always stand out as leaders.
We all want to bring out the best in our student's (child's) talents. In turn
we build their self-image and develop perseverance skills.Having
the feeling of achievement gives students the confidence to attack other challenges
in the future. This feeling of accomplishment alone is worth more than any
trophy or medal! We need to measure our achievements according to ourselves
and not others.
Dancer's Turnout Academy of Dance is dedicated to making this elite program
a positive experience for all. We are very proud of all of our students and
appreciate all our wonderful families.
Thank you for your participation!
