Anthony Garza
DANCING WITH BRITNEY JUST TIP OF THE ICEBERG
By Christina Sosa of
the Bakersfield Californian. When Anthony Garza was a senior at South
High School in 2001, he visited his guidance counselor to talk about
his career plans. Garza was excited about a career in dance and had
won first place in several contests. Garza expected his counselor
to be supportive. Instead she told him that dancers don’t make
any money, and being from a small town like Bakersfield, he should
choose another career. Even Garza’s mother, always supportive,
was a little concerned about what her son was trying to accomplish. “Your
common sense does tell you that, I had my worries,” Joady Garza
said. On Jan. 2, Garza accomplished the impossible as he headed off
to France to dance at a European award show with Britney Spears.
In March he and Spears will begin a tour that will last more than
a year and take him all over the world. “Even if your profession
is art, it is still is something that can work,” Garza said.
At 20, Garza has appeared in Pink’s “If God is a DJ” video,
a Dodge commercial, a Warner Bros, .movie called “Dramarama” and
regularly performs with Carmen Elektra and the Pussycat Dolls. To
take the job on Spears’ tour, Garza had to give up the chance
to dance with Janet Jackson at this year’s Super Bowl. While
the Spears tour is not scheduled to start until March, Garza would
not have been able to attend the required rehearsals for both the
Jackson Super Bowl performance and the Spears award show performance.
Missing out on the award show would have meant missing out on the
world tour. “It was like one of the hardest choices I’ve
ever hade to make in my life because all my life I’ve wanted
to dance with Janet Jackson,” Garza said. Garza ended up choosing
the tour because of the steady paycheck. “I want to be able
to give back to my mom, I’d love to be able to send checks
to my mom and pay her bills because she’s been supporting me
my entire life,” Garza said. “I am dumfounded. I am just
so happy for him,” Joady Garza said of her son’s blossoming
career. “He just grew into such an accomplished, beautiful
dancer.” Garza is most excited about going to London and Australia
on the tour because he has family there. About eight years ago, Garza’s
older sister Christina Garza, now 26 forced him to learn her cheerleading
routines. “I hated it at first,” said Garza. His sister
convinced him to take a hip-hop class at the Civic Dance Center and
soon after, Garza added classes at the Princess Dance Studio. By
the time he was a senior, Garza said he was accepted to a prestigious
ballet dance academy in New York. Garza had no ballet training and
faked his way through the audition, but was unable to attend the
school because of a back injury. After recovering, he went to Los
Angeles instead. “If you’re an amazing dancer, your career
can last until your about 35,” Garza said. After his dance
career is over. Garza plans to going into the fashion industry, an
area he’s already had some success in. Garza has clothing in
the Bakersfield store Shabby Chic. END Eventhough the third leg of
Britney Spears' "Onyx Hotel Tour" was cancelled due to
Miss Spears' knee injury, Anthony was quickly back in the game, returning
to L.A. to audition and teach. He has recently read for many directors
for small movie and television roles. He often travels to Japan to
teach at Broadway Dance Center Tokyo and New York City. Anthony also
traveled to Ponce, Puerto Rico to perform as a guest in the International
Salsa Congress. He filmed two movies; "Game" directed by
JJ Goldberger, where Anthony is an actor and dancer; and "Pledge
This" starring Paris Hilton, where he was assistant choreographer
to Brian Friedman. Together they choreographed a sexy, sultry scene
for Paris where she seduces her sex education teacher. Anthony recently
performed at The Edge Performing Arts Center's scholarship show for
choreographer Anes Krpic. The piece was called "Nourishment" and
he was a featured dancer, the only male. Anthony also shot a video
for Velvet Revolver (Fall to Pieces) as a model. His name is well
known in the dance industry and his talent is in demand. He has recently
started a new business, "The House of Blood, Sweat, and Tears",
featuring super-hot styling by BabyBoy, Porsia Deluxe, and Trina
Doll and mad sick photography by the babe Bryn Ranker. It's a house
of the arts, inclusive of; dance choreography, fashion, photography,
hair, and make-up, with future plans of an artist development program.
Eventually, Anthony plans to take his company to higher grounds entering
the couture fashion industry. For now, "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" is
at an entry level position; styling, dance showcases, photo shoots,
short films, videos, and artists submissions. Anthony also currently
teaches Advanced Jr & Sr classes at Dancer's Turnout on Thursday
nights. Anthony takes pride in his work and never stops reaching
for more.
